FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wellfleet, MA —01-02-2026
At approximately 10:05 a.m. this morning, the Wellfleet Fire Department and Wellfleet Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle attempting to drive through salt water during high tide on Lt. Island Road.

The vehicle stalled in the middle of the causeway with three occupants and one dog reported inside. Due to the conditions and potential medical concerns, mutual aid ambulances from Eastham and Truro were requested to assist.

The Wellfleet Fire Department’s high-water truck was dispatched to the scene. Firefighters safely and effectively navigated through the high water, reached the stalled vehicle, and removed all occupants and the dog. The individuals were then transported safely back to the mainland. No injuries were reported.

The Wellfleet Fire Department would like to remind residents and visitors that unique and environmentally sensitive areas such as Lt. Island are significantly affected by tides. Before traveling in these areas, individuals are strongly encouraged to research tidal conditions and understand local access limitations to prevent dangerous situations.

The Wellfleet Fire Department thanks our partners at the Wellfleet Police Department and the Eastham and Truro ambulance services for their assistance and cooperation during this response.
